Filmmaker Karan Johar, known for his flamboyant fashion sense and larger-than-life personality, recently revealed how he has consciously toned down his dressing style to shield his children, Yash and Roohi, from potential teasing or bullying at school. The candid conversation came during an episode of “Serving It Up With Sania,” hosted by tennis star Sania Mirza, where Johar opened up about the delicate balance between self-expression and parental responsibility.
On the show, Karan spoke about his concerns regarding how his children might perceive him, especially when they encounter old videos or photos online. Despite limiting their screen and iPad time, he acknowledged that children today are exposed to more than ever, and “things are popping up” that might make them react differently. Reflecting on his own performances, he recalled, “What’s really scary about me is that I might have done things as a form of expression. I know I’ve danced on Jaya Pradha’s steps to a song on Dafli Wale, not on Rishi Kapoor’s steps.”
He further explained that his efforts to adapt his wardrobe are aimed at minimizing negative attention at school. “Now, because of things that are being said at school, I literally changed the clothes I wear,” he said. “I am adapting so they don’t have to be afraid of what people at school might say if I’m wearing a sequin jacket. I am a maximalist. There are many people who say, ‘be who you are,’ but you’re always worried as a parent. I am worried they’ll go online and they’ll find footage that may embarrass them, and I hope they aren’t.”
Yet, Johar clarified that he does not intend to lose his identity in the process. He emphasized that while he makes certain compromises for his children’s sake, he also wants them to grow up accepting themselves and others. “I don’t want to change myself because of the world,” he said, underscoring his belief in raising children with a strong sense of acceptance and resilience.
Karan Johar’s personal life is deeply intertwined with his family. He shares a close bond with his mother, Hiroo Johar, and lives with her in Mumbai. He also has two children, Yash and Roohi, born via surrogacy in 2017, and named after his parents. Professionally, Karan continues to thrive, having most recently directed “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” in 2023, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
Through his candid reflections, Karan offers a glimpse into the challenges of parenting in the digital age, highlighting the constant tension between personal expression and protecting one’s children from scrutiny. His story resonates with parents navigating similar dilemmas, showing that even larger-than-life personalities can take thoughtful steps to safeguard their family’s emotional well-being.
