Pat Cummins Hints at Return for Second Ashes Test After Back Injury

Australia captain Pat Cummins has suggested he could return to lead his side for the second Ashes Test at the Gabba in Brisbane next month, after missing the opening match in Perth due to a back injury.

Cummins, currently ranked as the fourth-best bowler in Test cricket, sat out Australia’s dominant victory in the first Test, where Mitchell Starc took 10 wickets to skittle England for just 172 and 164 in their two innings. Despite his absence, Australia secured a commanding eight-wicket win inside two days, with Steve Smith taking over the captaincy and Scott Boland stepping in as a frontline pacer.

Cummins Progressing Well in Recovery

Speaking to Fox Sports TV, the 32-year-old revealed that his rehabilitation is progressing positively:

“It’s feeling good. I had a couple of good sessions in Perth this week, so having a big day where I’d bowl around 10 overs then a couple of quieter days and then going again. It’s on track and pulling up pretty well. Half a chance for the next game.”

Cummins added that he is hopeful for Brisbane, with about two weeks to fine-tune his fitness before the day-night Test starts on 4 December. He emphasized that his recovery is “probably better than it was a few weeks ago,” giving Australian fans optimism that the Ashes skipper could resume both his leadership and bowling duties.

Concerns Over Other Key Players

While Cummins’ potential return boosts Australia’s chances, there are concerns over Usman Khawaja, who struggled with a back flare-up in Perth and missed both innings while opening the batting. Cummins noted:

“Unfortunately Uzzy is not moving too well. His back flared up again in the slips going for a jump above his head, so he was unable to open.”

Australia may need to reconsider its top-order options if Khawaja is unable to recover in time for the Gabba Test.

First Test Recap: Australia Dominates

The first Ashes Test in Perth showcased Australia’s seam attack depth. With Starc leading the bowling charge and Cummins sidelined, Scott Boland performed admirably, and Steve Smith’s captaincy guided the side to a decisive victory. The match ended inside two days, underlining Australia’s dominance and leaving England searching for answers heading into Brisbane.

Cummins’ return would not only strengthen the bowling lineup but also restore stability in leadership as Australia aim to extend their Ashes winning streak on home soil.

Looking Ahead to the Gabba Test

The second Ashes Test promises to be a crucial encounter, particularly as it will be Australia’s first day-night Test of the series. Fans will be watching closely to see whether Cummins can overcome his back issues and reclaim his position as both captain and strike bowler.

Australia’s selectors will also need to monitor Khawaja’s fitness closely, as a fully fit opening batsman will be vital against England’s potent bowling attack.

If Cummins does return, Australia could field a near-full-strength squad, potentially putting England under immense pressure in Brisbane. The match kicks off on 4 December, with live coverage available on BBC Sport.
