First Lady Launches National Environment Club and Society

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has inaugurated the Environment Club and the Environment Society, urging young Nigerians to take active roles in protecting the nation’s environment and tackling climate challenges.

The national launch, held at the State House, Abuja, aims to nurture a generation of environmentally conscious citizens capable of promoting sustainability in schools, communities, and tertiary institutions.

In her address, Senator Tinubu praised young climate advocates, highlighting Esther Abraham, a Senior Secondary School 3 student from Government Senior Secondary School, Mabushi, for her evocative poem on environmental protection. “From Esther, I see the passion and the love… I look forward to working with you all in the future, by the grace of God,” she said.

The First Lady presented membership kits, including cards, handbooks, and tools, describing them as practical instruments for the students’ environmental roles. Reflecting on her background in educational biology and teaching environmental sanitation, she emphasized that young people are the ideal ambassadors for this initiative.

The clubs’ objectives include promoting environmental preservation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and fostering eco-friendly mindsets among youths. Activities for secondary school clubs will include school clean-ups, recycling, tree planting, and climate awareness campaigns, while university-based societies will lead shoreline clean-ups, reforestation drives, and campus-wide sustainability advocacy.

Mrs. Tinubu’s rallying motto, “Go Green Today for a Greener Tomorrow,” encapsulates the clubs’ mission. She noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes environmental sustainability, youth empowerment, and inclusive growth.

She also commended the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, and called on governors’ wives to support state-level environmental initiatives.
