The Benue State Police Command has arrested three suspects linked to the recent deadly attack on Anwule community in Ohimini Local Government Area, which claimed multiple lives, including that of a pastor.
The suspects, identified as Isah Peter and Moses Peter from Agatu LGA, along with a Fulani herdsman, were apprehended following weeks of investigation. Isah, the acting commander of the Eguma community vigilante group, allegedly used a community-owned firearm to execute the attack.
Speaking after his arrest, 22-year-old Isah claimed he acted on instructions from a man known only as “Pepper”, who allegedly provided the weapon. He also admitted to participating in several violent incidents along the Otukpo–Oweto highway.
The Otukpo–Oweto corridor has gained notoriety over the past year for attacks on travellers, with reports of abductions and killings by armed gangs and vigilante groups. Residents often limit travel to daylight hours or rely on police escorts.
Human rights activist Meddy Olotu condemned the attacks, saying:
“It is shocking that those entrusted with community protection have become instruments of terror. Security agencies must conduct a full investigation to restore safety along the Otukpo–Oweto highway.”
The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with further arrests expected as authorities work to dismantle the criminal network behind the attacks.
