The remains of Johnson Okoro Obasi, a 78-year-old man from Ekoli community, Edda Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, who was reportedly murdered by suspected political thugs, have been laid to rest.
Obasi was attacked on June 1, 2025, during a violent clash between rival political groups in the community, an incident that also resulted in several deaths and destruction of property worth millions of naira. An autopsy confirmed that Obasi died from internal bleeding and bruises sustained during the assault.
The burial took place at his home over the weekend, attended by family and community members, amidst tears and heartfelt tributes.
In a moving tribute, his nephew, Dr. Eni Uduma Chima, a former House of Assembly member and ex-chairman of the local government, lamented the untimely death of his uncle, describing it as a tragic interruption to a life marked by longevity, strength, and vision. Chima called for justice for Obasi and urged vigilance against his killers and their sponsors, who remain at large.
Obasi was remembered as a man blessed with good health, strength, family values, and remarkable foresight.
Traditional rulers of the community expressed deep concern over the continuing threat posed by political thugs. Etta Egor Akanu, one of the chiefs, condemned the perpetrators, claiming that some individuals previously arrested for violent acts in the community had been released, further destabilizing the area.
“Politicians sent their thugs to attack Okoro Obasi. He was killed by these ‘catcham boys’ who have long terrorized our community,” Akanu said.
“Government should stop releasing those causing trouble. The recommendations from the peace meeting with Governor Francis Nwifuru have not been implemented, and the community continues to live in fear.”
Another traditional ruler, Thomas Ama, echoed the call for action, urging the government to enforce disarmament directives and implement the peace recommendations to restore stability in Ekoli community.
