Russell Westbrook Joins Sacramento Kings Ahead of 18th NBA Season

Former NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) Russell Westbrook has officially signed with the Sacramento Kings, marking the start of his 18th season in the league.

The 36-year-old guard, who spent last season with the Denver Nuggets, averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds across 75 games during the 2024–25 campaign.

After becoming a free agent in June, following Denver’s Western Conference semi-final exit, Westbrook brings his trademark intensity and experience to a young and ambitious Sacramento roster.

A Historic Career of Records and Recognition

Westbrook, a nine-time NBA All-Star, remains one of the most dynamic guards in league history. He holds the NBA record for most career triple-doubles with 203 and twice led the league in scoring — in 2015 and 2017, the latter being his MVP-winning season with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Since being drafted by the Seattle Supersonics in 2008 (before their relocation to Oklahoma City), Westbrook has represented seven NBA teams, including:

  • Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Houston Rockets
  • Washington Wizards
  • Los Angeles Lakers
  • Los Angeles Clippers
  • Denver Nuggets
  • Sacramento Kings (current)

Kings Praise Westbrook’s Leadership and Competitiveness

Sacramento general manager Scott Perry expressed enthusiasm over the acquisition, highlighting Westbrook’s leadership qualities and competitive mindset.

“Russell embodies the identity we’re striving for in Sacramento,” Perry said.
“His résumé speaks for itself. I’m excited to work with someone so accomplished, who is fully committed to competing and winning. We expect him to strengthen our point guard position and provide leadership both on and off the court.”

Westbrook’s arrival adds veteran depth to a Kings team looking to solidify its place among Western Conference contenders after back-to-back playoff appearances under coach Mike Brown.

Westbrook’s Legacy and Next Chapter

While no longer the explosive triple-double machine of his peak years, Westbrook remains a relentless competitor and emotional leader. His experience could prove invaluable to a Sacramento lineup led by De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and rising star Keegan Murray.

For the Kings — a team seeking to combine youthful energy with veteran savvy — Westbrook’s signing symbolizes both ambition and belief that their championship window is opening.
