Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has cast doubt on Marcus Rashford’s recent claim that his struggles at Old Trafford were due to an “inconsistent environment.”
Speaking on the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, the 39-year-old Manchester United legend suggested that Rashford’s issues stem more from personal performance than external factors.
“I think the environment hasn’t been right, but that is down to yourself,” said Rooney.
“If you are not playing well or get left out, it’s easier to blame the environment. But that comes from how you apply yourself.”
Rashford’s Mixed Manchester United Career
Since making his debut in 2016, Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances for Manchester United, winning five major trophies, including the Europa League and FA Cup.
However, after a prolific 2022–23 campaign where he netted 30 goals, Rashford’s form dipped sharply. His struggles led to him being loaned to Aston Villa last season, where he failed to rediscover consistency before joining Barcelona on loan this summer.
Now thriving in La Liga, Rashford told reporters that he had “been in an inconsistent environment for a very long time,” referring to instability at Manchester United in recent years — a period that saw multiple managerial changes, tactical overhauls, and dressing room uncertainty.
Rooney’s Response: ‘That’s Too Easy to Say’
Rooney, who played alongside Rashford at both United and for England, said while he sympathizes with his former teammate, the explanation “feels too convenient.”
“We’ve all seen games where he can do more, where he can run more. That’s nothing to do with an environment,” Rooney added.
“I might be wrong — I really like Marcus as a person — but I think that’s an easy one to throw at people.”
The comments reflect Rooney’s belief that elite players must take individual accountability, even in challenging club circumstances.
Rashford’s Revival at Barcelona
Under Xavi Hernández, Rashford has looked rejuvenated, adapting well to Barcelona’s dynamic attacking system. His return to form — marked by several goals and assists — has reignited debate over whether Manchester United mishandled his development during turbulent seasons.
Barcelona fans have praised Rashford’s pace, creativity, and renewed confidence, while United supporters remain divided over his Old Trafford legacy.
Rooney on Liverpool vs Manchester United Showdown
Rooney also previewed Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, noting that pressure is mounting on Jurgen Klopp’s side after three straight losses in all competitions.
“If Liverpool lose four games in a row and lose to Manchester United at Anfield, the pressure is definitely on them,” Rooney said.
“They’ve brought in a lot of new players who all have egos and are still finding chemistry.”
Despite Liverpool’s shaky form, Rooney cautioned that United — currently inconsistent under Ruben Amorim — must stay focused to capitalize on the opportunity.
