Tebas Criticizes Real Madrid Over Miami Fixture
La Liga president Javier Tebas has taken aim at Real Madrid and club president Florentino Perez over the league’s decision to host the Villarreal vs Barcelona fixture in Miami on the weekend of December 20, 2025.
Despite approval from La Liga, Real Madrid issued a statement urging FIFA and UEFA to block the match, arguing that domestic fixtures should remain in Spain. Tebas, however, dismissed their objections.
“Real Madrid do not like anything that La Liga does. They can say nothing about this. The match is possible because the clubs want it, the players want it, and the fans want it,” Tebas said.
Tebas on Real Madrid Leadership
When asked whether he could envision Real Madrid ever participating in a La Liga game outside Spain, Tebas was blunt:
“With their current leaders it’s impossible. They don’t like us or anything that we do.”
Regarding his personal disagreements with Florentino Perez, Tebas emphasized that he does not see them as battles, praising Perez’s determination and work ethic:
“I don’t fight battles with Florentino. I evaluate what I’m doing. I’ve already said that Florentino never loses, he’s tenacious and very hard-working. I never count him out. The Super League was a death foretold.”
Tebas also suggested that recent stories about Real Madrid discussing UEFA matters coinciding with Barcelona’s ECA meetings are strategic moves by the club:
“What a coincidence that this story comes out when Barcelona is meeting with the ECA. It’s an attempt to win a battle they’ve already lost,” he concluded.
Conclusion:
Tebas’ remarks highlight ongoing tensions between La Liga leadership and Real Madrid, particularly regarding the globalization of Spanish football fixtures. The Miami match remains officially scheduled despite the club’s objections.
