Nigerian Groups Accuse Trump of Targeting Venezuela for Oil and Regime Change

The Venezuela Solidarity Campaign in Nigeria (VSCN), a coalition of civil society organizations, trade unions, and community groups, has condemned the recent suspension of flights to and from Venezuela following a U.S. security advisory, describing it as “yet another form of political and economic pressure” against the country.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the coalition said the advisory, which warned of risks in Venezuelan airspace, would deepen the humanitarian strain caused by longstanding U.S. sanctions. They argued the restrictions were not a genuine security measure but part of a broader effort to undermine Venezuela’s sovereignty and stability.

“These flight suspensions, driven by unilateral U.S. advisories, violate international norms and disproportionately harm ordinary Venezuelans,” the group said, citing Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which guarantees freedom of movement.

The VSCN also accused U.S. political leaders of planning military action in Venezuela under the pretext of combating “narco-terrorism,” dismissing these claims as fabricated narratives aimed at enabling regime change and securing oil interests. The group further condemned the deployment of U.S. naval assets near Venezuelan waters as unnecessary militarization.

Calling for global solidarity, the coalition urged African governments, international bodies, and U.S. citizens—particularly labor unions, progressives, and anti-war groups—to oppose any further aggression against Venezuela.

“We stand firmly with the Venezuelan people and government against all forms of external aggression,” the statement said, reaffirming the coalition’s commitment to sovereignty, peace, and self-determination.

The VSCN coalition includes the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Anti-Fascist Movement, Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria (FIWON), and African Farmers and Agricultural Practitioners (AFAP).
