Renowned Islamic Scholar Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Dies at 98

A revered Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dahiru Usman-Bauchi, has passed away at the age of 98.

He died in the early hours of Thursday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, a family member confirmed.

Malam Ahmed Mohammed, speaking on behalf of the family, said the scholar had been receiving visitors on Wednesday night before being taken to the hospital, where he later passed away. The funeral prayer is scheduled for Friday, November 28, in Bauchi, in accordance with Islamic rites.

Born in 1927 in Gombe, Usman-Bauchi was widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential Islamic scholars. He was a recipient of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and served as the supreme leader of the Tijjaniya, a prominent Sufi order in Nigeria.

Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to Islamic education, spiritual guidance, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence and unity. His teachings emphasized moral discipline, tolerance, and adherence to Islamic principles, earning him mass followership and respect both in Nigeria and beyond.

Usman-Bauchi also played an active role in community development, mentorship of young scholars, and the strengthening of religious understanding in the country.

He is survived by 61 children, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
