Church of Nigeria Inaugurates Missionary Diocese of Oyo South

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has officially inaugurated the Missionary Diocese of Oyo South and enthroned its first bishop, The Right Reverend Dr. Olufemi Familoni. The historic service took place at the Cathedral Church of St. John’s Akinmoorin in Oyo State.

The event was presided over by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, The Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, and was attended by over 40 bishops and archbishops, government officials, traditional rulers, and hundreds of Anglican faithful from across the country. With this inauguration, Oyo South becomes the Church’s 167th diocese.

Bishop Familoni, in his inaugural sermon, encouraged Christians to remain prayerful and courageous despite the security challenges affecting parts of the country. He also called on all levels of government to step up efforts to protect citizens and restore peace.

“Our vision for the new Diocese is to shine the light of Christ by reaching out to the less privileged and those in need,” Bishop Familoni said. “We are driven by God’s purpose, just like Abraham, who left his comfort zone and became the father of nations.”

The new Diocese will focus on missionary outreach, youth development, collaboration with traditional institutions, and community engagement programs for vulnerable groups.

Members of the Diocese said the creation of Oyo South is a strategic move to bring the Church’s spiritual, pastoral, and social services closer to communities in Akinmoorin, Awe, Fiditi, Jobele, and Ilora. The colourful inauguration featured hymns, prayers, thanksgiving, and the traditional rites of enthronement, marking a new chapter of ministry in the area.
