Idli, vada and unease: Siddaramaiah-DK Shivakumar breakfast ends without breakthrough

Bengaluru, November 29, 2025 – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumarmet for a much-anticipated breakfast on Saturday at the CM’s official residence, Kaveri, in an effort to calm speculation about a possible leadership transition in the state Congress.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, reportedly ended in smiles but no major breakthrough. Sources said both leaders held firm to their positions: Siddaramaiah maintained that he would complete his full five-year term, while Shivakumar reiterated expectations of taking over as CM after Siddaramaiah’s halfway mark in 2028—a promise widely discussed but never officially confirmed by the party.

At a press conference following the breakfast, the leaders projected unity. Siddaramaiah said, “We don’t have differences… even today there are no differences; there won’t be any in future as well.” Shivakumar emphasized the Congress’s need to remain united, stating, “We don’t have factionalism… we will take everyone along and abide by the party high command.”

Despite the cordial tone, party insiders noted the core issue—the rotational CM arrangement—remains unresolved. While the breakfast helped lower tensions, it did not settle the leadership question that has simmered for nearly two months.

The BJP, observing the Congress’s internal dynamics, has reportedly warned of a possible no-confidence motion if the tussle continues. Siddaramaiah said the party was preparing to face the BJP and JD(S) in the assembly, signaling focus on governance despite lingering internal disagreements.
