Shillong, November 29, 2025: Meghalaya launched its inaugural Northeast India Organic Week, bringing together delegations and buyers from 13 countries, including Malaysia, Taiwan, Mongolia, Indonesia, and New Zealand, to promote trade and innovation in the organic sector.
Organised in partnership with the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), Union Commerce Ministry, and IFOAM-Organics Asia, the event aims to position Meghalaya and the Northeast as a global hub for organic agriculture.
Officials highlighted the state’s strong farming traditions, biodiversity, and export potential. Key initiatives include:
- A ₹25 crore ginger processing unit, the largest organic spice facility in the Northeast.
- Expansion of certified organic farming to one lakh hectares (25% of cultivated land) by 2028.
- Development of bio-curcumin extraction units and bamboo-based soil-reviving biochar.
The event featured an exhibition of certified organic products, including Lakadong turmeric, GI-tagged Khasi mandarins, and organic black pepper, alongside buyer-seller meetings and sessions on certification and labelling norms under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP).
Officials said Meghalaya’s organic sector is one of the fastest-growing in India, and the government’s hub-and-spoke model links village-level production to major processing centers, aiming to double farmers’ income by 2028.
The week-long event runs until December 1, fostering global collaboration, youth-led innovation, and a robust ecosystem for organic agriculture in Northeast India.
