New Delhi, November 30, 2025 – A tragic road accident early on Sunday in Vasant Kunj claimed the life of a young man and left two others injured when a speeding Mercedes lost control and hit a roadside pole, police officials said. The driver, identified as a 29-year-old resident of Karol Bagh, has been detained, and authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the collision.
How the Accident Unfolded
According to preliminary police reports, the accident occurred around 2:30 am near Nelson Mandela Marg, a busy thoroughfare adjacent to Ambience Mall. The three victims, all employees of a restaurant located in the mall, were standing near a roadside pole when the car, reportedly moving at high speed, veered off the road and struck the pole.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said, “A police control room call came in at 2:33 am regarding the accident. Upon arrival, officers found the damaged Mercedes and three injured individuals at the scene. The driver, Shivam, had allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to a diversion on the road and collided with the pole at an auto stand where the victims were standing.”
Police confirmed that Shivam had borrowed the luxury car from a friend to attend a wedding. He was returning home along with his wife and elder brother when the incident occurred. The combination of high speed and road diversionreportedly contributed to the vehicle losing balance.
Victims and Immediate Response
The three individuals hit by the car were aged approximately 23, 25, and 35. Among them, Rohit Singh, a 23-year-old resident of Chamoli in Uttarakhand, succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a nearby hospital. The other two victims sustained serious injuries and are currently undergoing medical care, police said.
“All three were employees at a restaurant in Ambience Mall,” DCP Goel confirmed. “The vehicle has been seized, and the driver has been apprehended. Legal proceedings are underway, and we are gathering statements from the injured and eyewitnesses.”
Driver Detained, FIR Pending
The police have detained Shivam, who is being questioned regarding the circumstances of the accident. No First Information Report (FIR) has been formally registered yet, as authorities await statements from the injured victims and other witnesses.
A senior police official said, “At this stage, the investigation is focusing on whether the accident was purely due to loss of control or if there was any negligence on part of the driver. Once statements are recorded, an FIR will be lodged, and further legal action will follow as per the provisions of law.”
Road Safety Concerns
This accident comes amid growing concerns over road safety in Delhi, especially involving high-speed vehicles on busy urban streets. Incidents involving luxury cars have often raised public debate regarding reckless driving and the enforcement of traffic regulations in the city.
Experts highlight that early morning hours pose additional risks, as visibility may be low and drivers may misjudge turns or diversions. In this case, the police indicated that a diversion on Nelson Mandela Marg played a role in the vehicle losing balance.
Community Reaction
The sudden death of Rohit Singh has shocked colleagues and local residents. Many have expressed grief over the loss of a young life and concern for the safety of workers commuting late at night. Social media posts by friends and family mourned Singh’s passing, while also appealing for stricter enforcement of traffic rules to prevent such accidents in the future.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly on roads with ongoing construction or diversions, and to avoid overspeeding, especially in residential and commercial areas.
Next Steps in Investigation
Police are continuing their inquiry into the accident, gathering CCTV footage from nearby establishments and reviewing eyewitness accounts. Investigators are also assessing whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or other substances, as part of standard protocol in traffic-related fatalities.
DCP Goel added, “Necessary legal action will be taken against the driver depending on the findings of the investigation. The safety of pedestrians and other road users remains our priority, and we are working to ensure accountability in this case.”
The tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by high-speed vehicles in crowded urban areas and the need for stringent traffic enforcement to protect public safety.
