Sinners, the R-rated horror-thriller directed by Ryan Coogler, continues to make waves at the box office with an impressive second-weekend performance, earning $45 million and experiencing only a 6% drop from its strong opening weekend. This minimal decline marks a significant achievement, especially for a horror film, and solidifies Sinners as a dominant force at the global box office.
Impressive Second-Weekend Earnings for Sinners
Warner Bros.’ Sinners has now grossed a total of $122.5 million domestically after just 10 days in theaters, contributing to a weekend box office total of $146 million—the best final April frame since the pandemic began. The film’s strong performance in IMAX theaters has been a key factor, with Sinners generating $10.25 million from IMAX screenings alone during its second weekend. Overall, IMAX screenings have contributed $25.3 million to the domestic gross, accounting for 21% of the film’s earnings in the U.S. and Canada.
The Michael B. Jordan-led film now holds the title for the second-highest second-weekend gross for an R-rated horror film, trailing behind It ($60.1 million) and surpassing many other horror film records. Additionally, it stands as the third-best second-weekend performance for Coogler, after his Black Panther films.
Audience Demographics and International Success
Sinners has shown strong audience appeal across multiple demographics. The film’s audience shifted from 43% female in its opening weekend to 56% female in the second weekend, with increased engagement from viewers under 25. In terms of racial diversity, 43% of viewers were Black, 25% were Caucasian, 17% Latino/Hispanic, and 11% Asian American.
Internationally, Sinners has grossed an additional $39.1 million, pushing its global total to a robust $161.6 million. The film opened in 3,308 theaters and expanded to 3,347 theaters in its second weekend, proving its wide-reaching appeal across regions.
Sinners Continues to Surpass Box Office Expectations
Sinners continues to outperform industry expectations, contributing to one of the highest box office totals for a late-April weekend, just behind The Avengers weekends and the debut of Fast Five. The film has proven especially popular in the South and is benefiting from positive word-of-mouth, which bodes well for its future earnings. Its second-weekend breakdown saw $13 million on Friday, $18.8 million on Saturday, and $13.2 million on Sunday.
With Sinners continuing to perform well across the board, it’s clear that Ryan Coogler’s film is cementing its place as one of the biggest box office hits of the year.
