Former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. John Obioru, has called on the Federal Government to reform Nigeria’s border security and strengthen community policing systems as a strategy to tackle the country’s worsening insecurity.
Obioru stressed that the current security architecture has been overstretched, with porous borders and weak local policing structures contributing to the rise in kidnappings, banditry, and insurgency across the nation.
According to him, adopting a comprehensive border management system and empowering community-based policing initiatives will enhance intelligence gathering, promote early threat detection, and foster collaboration between security agencies and local communities.
He also emphasized the importance of capacity-building, technology adoption, and inter-agency coordination as critical steps in reducing criminal activities and restoring public confidence in the security system.
Obioru urged the government to act swiftly, warning that without immediate reforms, insecurity could escalate further, particularly in vulnerable regions.
