The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man, David Effiong, for allegedly causing a public disturbance while dressed in full masquerade attire, despite an ongoing ban on masquerade activities in the state.
Effiong was apprehended after residents reported that he was creating a nuisance and reportedly damaging property in the community on Tuesday.
Confirming the arrest, Commissioner of Police Baba Azare stated that Effiong will face court charges. Police noted that the investigation into his activities is ongoing and that he will be arraigned upon its completion.
The arrest comes amid heightened enforcement of the state government’s directive, issued by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, prohibiting all public masquerade displays due to increasing incidents of intimidation, violence, and property destruction linked to masqueraders.
Authorities warn that despite repeated warnings, some masqueraders continue to pose a threat to public safety across the state.
