A24 has unveiled the first official trailer for Mother Mary, giving audiences a dramatic first look at Anne Hathaway as a troubled pop superstar fighting to reclaim her voice, her confidence, and her past. Set to release in spring 2026, the upcoming film pairs Hathaway with a powerhouse creative team and an electrifying soundtrack from some of today’s most influential musicians.
A Pop Star in Crisis
In the newly released trailer, Hathaway, 43, transforms into Mother Mary, a globally recognized pop singer standing at a crossroads in her life and career. Preparing for a high-stakes comeback tour, the superstar seeks help from her former best friend and fashion designer Sam Anselm, played by Emmy winner Michaela Coel.
But their reunion is anything but simple. According to A24’s official synopsis, “Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam on the eve of her comeback performance.”
The trailer hints at an atmospheric, eerie tone—blending psychological drama, fame, friendship, and the unsettling pressures of reinvention.
A Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
Directed by David Lowery, the visionary filmmaker behind The Green Knight, the movie boasts a striking ensemble, including:
- Michaela Coel
- Hunter Schafer
- Atheena Frizzell
- Kaia Gerber
- Jessica Brown Findlay
- Alba Baptista
- Isaura Barbé-Brown
- Sian Clifford
- FKA Twigs
In addition to her acting role, FKA Twigs contributes to the film’s original soundtrack alongside Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff, all known for pushing creative boundaries in modern pop. Their music promises to give Mother Mary a distinctive sonic world with emotional and stylistic depth.
Anne Hathaway on Becoming a Pop Performer
This role demanded a total transformation from Hathaway. In an earlier Vogue interview, she reflected on the challenge of learning skills that were completely new to her.
“I had to submit to being a beginner,” she explained. “You show up every day knowing you’re not good at it yet. You’re not ‘bad,’ you’re just a beginner.”
She described the process as difficult but ultimately transformational, comparing it to shedding old habits in order to grow into something entirely new.
A Film Years in the Making
Mother Mary has been on fans’ radars since Deadline reported in March 2023 that Hathaway and Coel would lead the project. Notably, the movie was among the independent productions granted a SAG-AFTRA waiver during the 2023 actors’ strike, allowing filming to continue.
In July 2024, Hathaway shared a behind-the-scenes black-and-white photo from set on Instagram, calling the film “one of the most extraordinary, transformative experiences I have ever had.”
More Hathaway Projects Coming in 2026
The actress is gearing up for a landmark year—Mother Mary is only one of several major releases on her schedule. Hathaway will also appear in:
- The Devil Wears Prada 2 – May 1, 2026
- The Odyssey – July 17, 2026
- Verity – October 2, 2026
With multiple major roles on the horizon, 2026 is shaping up to be one of Hathaway’s biggest years yet.
