Nigeria-US Relations Remain Strong Despite Individual Visa Restrictions – Information Minister Idris

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has assured that Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with the United States remain intact, despite the recent visa restrictions targeting certain individuals.

Speaking on Arise Television, Idris emphasized that visa decisions are within the sovereign rights of any country and do not affect overall bilateral relations.

“Issues of visas are prerogatives of every nation. The American government—or any government—has its own visa policy, which it reviews from time to time. Government to government, Nigeria and the United States are still working closely to find solutions wherever there are grey areas or challenges,” he said.

The Minister was responding to questions regarding the US visa restrictions announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which targeted Nigerians allegedly involved in funding or supporting religious persecution, particularly against Christians.

Idris reaffirmed that Nigeria and the United States continue to maintain normal diplomatic relations and are actively collaborating to address any outstanding challenges.

“We are committed, open, and engaging the United States to resolve any diplomatic tensions that have arisen. But we still have normal diplomatic relations and are working together to advance the mutual interests of both countries,” he added.
