Fuel Tanker Catches Fire on Kutigi Road in Niger State

Traffic came to a standstill on Kutigi Road in Lavun Local Government Area of Niger State on Monday morning after a fuel tanker caught fire, sending thick black smoke into the sky and causing panic among motorists and nearby residents.

Emergency services promptly responded to the scene, working to contain the fire and secure the area. Authorities later confirmed that the blaze was under control and that no casualties had been reported, while investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing.

Confirming the development to SaharaReporters, Aishat Saadu, Sector Commander of the Niger State Command, said, “It’s true, no casualties reported for now, the situation is under control.” She added that a full report was being compiled and would be released soon.

The incident comes amid a worrying trend of tanker fires in Niger State, often triggered by accidents, collisions, or fuel spillage followed by ignition.

In October, a tanker overturned on the Bida–Agaie Road, killing 35 people and injuring dozens as bystanders attempted to collect the spilled fuel.

In 2024, a fuel-laden truck collided with another vehicle along the Kontagora–Minna Road, sparking a fire that injured several people and destroyed nearby property.

Another tanker fire occurred in March 2023 on the Kutigi–Bida route, damaging nearby vehicles and temporarily closing the road, though no casualties were reported.

Authorities continue to urge motorists and residents to exercise caution around fuel-laden vehicles to prevent similar tragedies.
