Why ‘Japa’ Isn’t Always Necessary If You’re Earning Well in Nigeria — Ms DSF

Media personality Dorcas Shola Fapson, widely known as Ms DSF, has urged Nigerians earning comfortable incomes at home to think twice before relocating abroad, noting that moving overseas does not automatically translate to a better life.

Speaking on a podcast with Jay On Air, Ms DSF explained that many people wrongly assume that living in the UK guarantees higher earnings. According to her, the high cost of living—especially rent, transportation, and basic expenses—often leaves migrants with little to save, even when earning in pounds.

She shared her father’s experience as an example, recalling how he juggled several jobs after relocating abroad yet struggled to make enough to support their family.

“People think being abroad means you’re making pounds. Someone abroad doing cleaner work or taxi driving might be earning per hour, but you probably have better opportunities here in Nigeria,” she said.

Ms DSF noted that while earning in foreign currency can be appealing, it often comes with stress and a demanding work schedule that many people underestimate.

“Do you know how much rent is in the UK? Do you know how much public transport costs? Before you even make your salary, so much has already gone. When my dad first moved, he worked as a taxi driver, then a security guard, then an accountant—9 to 5, then 5 to 9—just to earn a little money.”

She emphasised that although success abroad is possible, it requires intense hustle and patience. For Nigerians earning well and living comfortably, staying back might offer more stability, opportunities, and peace of mind than starting over in an unfamiliar environment.

“If you make it in the UK, it’s great because pounds are strong. But it’s not as easy as people think. You really have to hustle to build your way up,” she added.
