United States Congressman Riley Moore has raised renewed concerns about Nigeria’s deepening security crisis, warning that despite recent progress, the country still faces significant challenges in combating terrorism and widespread killings, particularly in the North-East and Middle Belt.
In a statement posted on X on Monday, Moore said he met with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, where discussions focused on the rising wave of violent attacks across several regions. He noted that the issue remains a top priority for both himself and U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Moore, the U.S. delegation and Nigerian officials examined a number of “concrete steps and actions” that, if fully implemented, could help stabilise affected areas and weaken terrorist networks.
“There were concrete steps and actions discussed at length, that if fully executed, I believe will enhance security across the country for all Nigerians, disrupt and destroy terrorist organisations in the northeast and stop the killing of Christians — a specific concern for @POTUS and me — particularly in the Middle Belt,” he stated.
Moore also commented on the recent rescue of 100 abducted pupils of St. Mary’s Catholic Private School in Niger State, expressing appreciation to the Nigerian government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the successful operation.
“This is a positive demonstration of the government’s increasing response to the security situation and shows commitment to the emergency declaration laid out by President Tinubu,” he said.
He added that discussions with Nigerian authorities were constructive, highlighting the establishment of a joint U.S.-Nigeria task force as a strong indication of improving cooperation between both nations.
“The U.S.’ sense of urgency on our concerns was positively received. I feel that a cooperative security framework is within sight. The now established joint task force between Nigeria and the U.S. is a great example.”
Despite this progress, Moore cautioned that intentions must be matched with decisive, measurable action.
“It is clear that there is an openness and willingness on the part of the Nigerian government to work with the United States to tackle these critical issues. Now, that openness has to translate to concrete action.”
He acknowledged that while early developments are encouraging, Nigeria’s security challenges remain far from resolved.
“There is much work still to be done, but things are moving in the right direction. I look forward to the next steps with the Nigerian government and the continued open dialogue.”
The congressman concluded his remarks with a message of solidarity and goodwill:
“Peace be with you all. God bless the great people of Nigeria.”
