The Enugu State government has announced plans to restrict tricycles (Keke), yellow buses, and minibuses from major highways in preparation for the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
Transport Commissioner Dr. Obi Ozor disclosed the plan during a consultative meeting with transport unions and stakeholders, explaining that the measure aims to ensure the smooth rollout of Governor Peter Mbah’s mass transit reforms to create a modern and globally competitive transport system.
Major Routes Affected
The following highways will serve as dedicated BRT corridors:
- Okpara Avenue → Abakaliki Road → New Haven Junction → Naira Triangle → Emene Airport corridor
- Ogui Road → Chime Avenue → Naira Triangle
- New Haven Junction → Bisala Road → Rangers Avenue → WAEC → Nkpokiti → Zik’s Avenue
- Ogui Road → Presidential Road → WAEC → Nkpokiti
- Entire Agbani Road stretch
Tricycles and yellow buses will be reassigned to secondary roads, while BRT buses will operate on primary routes.
BRT System Highlights
- Fleet: 200 CNG-powered BRT buses and 4,000 electric taxis, locally assembled at ANAMMCO.
- Bus shelters: 84 across Enugu.
- Amenities: Air-conditioned buses with padded seats, WiFi, and real-time tracking from a central command centre.
- Fare discount: 47% reduction for commuters.
- Electronic fare system (Ije Card): Decentralized to reach 5 million residents within 90 days.
Dr. Ozor emphasized that the system is designed for efficiency and safety, noting that standing passengers will not be allowed.
Stakeholder Engagement and Investment
- Transport unions are encouraged to submit proposals to operate BRT buses or manage terminals, including financial plans for review.
- A joint review committee of ministry officials and union representatives has been established to finalize operational details.
- Union leaders expressed support but requested affordable alternatives for tricycle operators.
- The government assured that no operator will be displaced; they will instead be integrated into the new transport structure.
Opportunities
- Operators can invest in BRT buses or participate in terminal management.
- The project is expected to improve connectivity within Enugu and to neighboring cities, presenting long-term business prospects for transport providers.
