Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn on Tuesday spoke about his approach to sequels, emphasizing that he does not mind reprising roles for follow-up films as long as the script justifies revisiting a character. The actor, who has appeared in multiple sequels this year including Raid 2, Son of Sardaar 2, and the upcoming De De Pyaar De 2, stressed the importance of strong storytelling in continuing a franchise.
Sequels With Substance
At the trailer launch of De De Pyaar De 2, Devgn said, “I don’t mind sequels as long as there is a good script… Like most artists I hope it is liked by the audiences. We all believe we have made a good film and I loved working with Luv Ranjan. I believe his films are modern, timely and novel.”
De De Pyaar De, which released in 2019, revolved around the unconventional romance between 50-year-old Ashish (Ajay Devgn) and 26-year-old Aisha, exploring the chaos that ensued when Ashish introduced her to his family. In the sequel, directed by Anshul Sharma, the narrative flips the perspective, focusing on Aisha introducing Ashish to her family, with R Madhavan playing her father.
On-Screen Chemistry and Cast Dynamics
Rakul Preet Singh, reprising her role as Aisha, expressed her excitement about returning to a character she loved. “Ayesha is one of my most favourite characters, and the love she got from the first De De Pyaar De was so exciting for all of us, so to relive that character was fun… I had double the fun shooting for part two,” she said.
R Madhavan, who previously worked with Ajay Devgn in the 2024 blockbuster Shaitaan, shared his experience joining the established cast. “I am in love with Ajay sir… I knew I was jumping into a family that has already been established but it was such an awesome experience. Meezan and I were new to the cast but we felt so wanted and after we wrapped the shoot I felt so sad,” Madhavan said.
Asked about portraying the father of Devgn’s on-screen girlfriend despite being nearly the same age, Madhavan noted, “I have never done a father’s role before and competing with Ajay, I was very nervous. I have seen other actors who are so busy when they come to the set but Ajay sir is always present on the set and dedicated. We have always felt connected.”
Nostalgia and Modern Storytelling
Devgn’s emphasis on script quality underscores a growing trend in Bollywood where sequels are evaluated not merely as commercial ventures but as extensions of a story that audiences have connected with. He highlighted that returning to familiar characters is exciting if the story is relevant and resonates with the viewers.
De De Pyaar De 2 also stars the father-son duo of Jaaved Jaaferi and Meezaan Jafri, alongside Gautami Kapoor and Ishita Dutta. Produced by T-Series’ Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar, in collaboration with Luv Films’ Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg, the film promises to blend humor, romance, and familial dynamics, continuing the charm of its predecessor.
