Political Leader Demands Ban on Vijay Sethupathi’s Bigg Boss Tamil Over ‘Indecent’ Content

In Tamil Nadu, the popular reality show Bigg Boss Tamil, currently hosted by actor Vijay Sethupathi, has come under political scrutiny as Velumurugan, leader of the Thamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) and an ally of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has demanded a ban on the show, citing concerns over its content and alleged denigration of Tamil culture. The controversy has intensified public discussion on morality, media responsibility, and the influence of reality television in the state.

Velumurugan Raises Concerns About ‘Vile’ Acts

During a press conference on Tuesday, Velumurugan clarified that his opposition is not against television programming in general. He acknowledged that some shows promote Tamil culture effectively. However, he criticized Bigg Boss Tamil, claiming it broadcasts “vile acts” that, in his view, undermine the ethics, values, and cultural integrity of Tamil society. He argued, “The script writers don’t care if the Tamil community suffers any harm. They are running the programme on the basis that money is most important,” highlighting the commercial motivations he perceives behind the show.

Velumurugan specifically cited the depiction of intimate moments on the show, pointing out “disgusting body movements, kissing scenes, and bedroom scenes, which cannot be viewed in the presence of a mature girl or children, are being shown.” While he admitted that the show has refrained from depicting sexual intercourse so far, he stressed that such content is inappropriate for family viewing. He questioned, “If Vijay TV should make money by continuing to host such a disgusting, low-class, indecent programme,” framing the debate as a moral concern rather than merely a critique of entertainment.

Steps Taken by the Political Leader

To escalate his concerns, Velumurugan revealed that he had approached the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker, Appavu, submitting an attention-seeking motion. He warned that if the Speaker did not admit the motion for discussion, and if the Chief Minister or relevant departments did not act to ban the show, he and supporters would stage a protest both inside the Bigg Boss arena and at Vijay Television offices. Velumurugan emphasized that the protest would include several thousand women, signaling a significant potential mobilization.

This bold stance underscores the intersection of politics, media scrutiny, and public morality in Tamil Nadu, where reality television often faces heightened societal and political attention.

Bigg Boss Tamil Season 9

The current season, Season 9, premiered on Vijay TV on October 5, 2025, featuring 20 contestants. Vijay Sethupathi, a celebrated Tamil actor, is hosting the show. Bigg Boss Tamil continues to maintain high viewership and social media engagement, despite the ongoing controversy.

The show has often attracted scrutiny for its depiction of interpersonal relationships, conflicts, and intimacy, which are common traits of the global Bigg Boss franchise. The debate in Tamil Nadu raises broader questions about media content regulation, the responsibilities of broadcasters, and the balance between entertainment and societal norms.

Public and Media Reaction

While Velumurugan’s comments have garnered media attention, reactions among the public and social media users have been mixed. Some viewers have supported the call for a ban, agreeing that family-friendly content standards should be upheld. Others have argued that reality shows, by nature, are unscripted and reflect human behavior, suggesting that viewers, rather than politicians, should exercise discretion in watching.

Critics of Velumurugan’s move have highlighted that adult content on television is generally regulated by established broadcast codes and guidelines in India, and imposing a ban based on selective content could lead to censorship debates. Nevertheless, the protest threat indicates that the issue could escalate into a larger political and social confrontation if not addressed by authorities.

Broader Context

Reality television shows in India frequently attract criticism for provocative content. Programs like Bigg Boss often walk a fine line between entertainment, controversy, and cultural sensitivity. Tamil Nadu, with its rich cinematic and cultural heritage, has historically seen politicians and cultural activists intervene when television content is perceived as offensive or morally inappropriate.

This episode exemplifies the ongoing tension between creative freedom, viewer responsibility, and political activism. As the season continues, it remains to be seen whether Vijay TV will modify its programming, face regulatory action, or navigate the controversy while retaining its audience.
