Abia, NDPHC Kick Off 7.5MVA Injection Substation Construction in Umuahia

The Abia State Government, in collaboration with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), has begun construction of a 7.5MVA, 33/11kV Injection Substation in Umuahia.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Governor Alex Otti described the project as transformative, noting it will boost power supply, improve distribution reliability, and mark the start of broader efforts to modernise Abia’s electricity network.

Executed under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), the project includes:

  • Construction of a 1km 33kV line and 1.2km 11kV line
  • Installation of two 300kVA distribution substations
  • Provision of 2km low-tension line

Governor Otti lauded the Federal Government and NDPHC for prioritising Abia, while also commending President Bola Tinubu’s power sector reforms, which encourage state participation, private investment, and global partnerships.

He revealed that an additional 7.5MVA substation is budgeted for 2026, which will raise the total capacity in the Ogurube Layout area to 15MVA.

Representing NDPHC, Executive Director, Networks Bello Babayo Bello, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to providing reliable and sustainable electricity nationwide, highlighting that the Umuahia project aligns with the mandate to empower communities and drive economic development.

Upon completion, the substation is expected to strengthen electricity supply, support small businesses, foster industrial growth, and improve the quality of life for residents of Umuahia and neighbouring communities.
