Activist and lawyer Chetam Nwala has criticized the Supreme Court of Nigeria, saying its recent ruling effectively gives the Federal Government a free ride to suppress ordinary citizens.

Speaking on Arise Television, Nwala was reacting to the Court’s decision reaffirming the President’s constitutional power to declare a state of emergency in any state where circumstances threaten public safety or governance.

He argued that the judgment undermines democracy by restricting citizens’ ability to challenge government actions. “The Supreme Court has tied the hands of the people and those who can challenge federal actions, giving the government an easy ride. This creates confusion and is a danger to our democracy,” Nwala said.

He further warned that the ruling could also affect governors and other state officials, deepening uncertainty and weakening democratic checks and balances.
