Fire Destroys Sections of Gombe Timber Market; Governor Promises Investigation and Relief

A late-night fire swept through parts of Gombe’s renowned timber market, Kasuwar Katako, near the Railway Station area, causing extensive damage to shops and goods. In response, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has called for an immediate investigation and pledged emergency assistance for affected traders.

The blaze, which erupted Monday night after business hours, left many traders grappling with substantial financial losses.

In an official statement from Ismaila Misilli, Director-General of Press Affairs at Gombe Government House, Governor Yahaya described the incident as “deeply troubling,” noting its severe impact on residents who depend on the market for their livelihoods.

He extended heartfelt sympathies to those affected and reassured traders that the state government would provide support during the recovery process.

“We are committed to assisting the affected traders through this challenging period,” the governor affirmed.

Governor Yahaya instructed the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (GOSEMA) and other relevant authorities to quickly assess the damage, determine the fire’s cause, and distribute urgent relief materials to minimize losses.

He also praised the rapid response of the Gombe State Fire Service, supported by Gombe State University personnel, the Federal Fire Service, private water tanker operators, security agencies, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society, whose combined efforts helped contain the fire and prevent further destruction.

The governor called for calm among the affected traders and reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to strengthening fire safety and emergency services in the state, including plans to establish a modern, fully equipped fire service facility.

The statement also noted that Governor Yahaya had been briefed on an accident involving one of the firefighting trucks during the operation and expressed concern for the injured personnel, wishing them a swift recovery.
