INEC Chairman Seeks Senate Backing Ahead of 2027 Elections

Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), met with the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, to discuss his priorities for strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 elections. The session marked his first formal engagement with the Committee since assuming office.

Accompanied by National Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, and technical aides, Prof. Amupitan highlighted electoral reform, infrastructure development, voter education, and the deployment of technology as key focus areas. He praised the Senate’s support during his confirmation and emphasised the importance of collaboration between INEC and the legislature to ensure credible and transparent elections.

Reflecting on the successful Anambra Governorship Election of November 8, 2025, he noted that inter-agency cooperation and legislative backing contributed to a smooth process, offering lessons for improving logistics and operational efficiency in future elections.

Prof. Amupitan stressed the critical role of voter education, asserting that informed citizen participation is essential for credible elections. He also highlighted that preparations for upcoming elections, including FCT Area Council and other off-cycle elections in 2026, depend on timely legislative action on electoral reforms.

Senator Simon Bako Lalong, chairman of the Senate Committee, welcomed the engagement, describing it as a milestone in enhancing Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He reassured INEC of the Committee’s commitment to legislative support, oversight, and policy guidance, while emphasising that respect for INEC’s independence remains paramount.

The meeting underscored the shared goal of ensuring transparent, efficient, and credible elections, reinforcing institutional collaboration ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
