Gloucester Rugby has confirmed that Wales international scrum-half Tomos Williams will depart the club at the conclusion of the 2025/26 Premiership season. The 30-year-old has been a key figure at Kingsholm since signing in 2024, captaining the side this season and earning Premiership Player of the Season in June.
Gloucester Statement on Williams’ Exit
A club statement confirmed:
“Tomos Williams will depart Gloucester Rugby at the end of the 2025/26 season. After impressing at Kingsholm, Williams was offered a new deal to stay at the club beyond the end of the season, but has instead opted to pursue a new challenge elsewhere. The Welshman will depart with the best wishes of everyone at the club when the time comes, but in the meantime, is entirely dedicated to ending his time at Gloucester Rugby on a high.”
Williams’ decision marks the end of a short but highly impactful spell at the Cherry and Whites, where he has stood out as both a leader and playmaker.
Career Highlights
Williams has earned 69 caps for Wales, playing a pivotal role in both the national team and British and Irish Lions setups. He was selected for the 2025 Lions tour, impressing in a pre-tour warm-up against Argentina and scoring two tries before a hamstring injury in the opening match against Western Force forced him to return home.
Since joining Gloucester in 2024, Williams has:
- Been named Premiership Player of the Season in June 2025
- Captained the Cherry and Whites during the current campaign
- Established himself as a key figure in Gloucester’s attack and leadership group
Previous Clubs
Williams began his senior career at Gloucester, making 80 appearances before moving to Wasps, where he spent seven years until the club’s demise in 2022. He then played for French Top 14 side Pau for three seasons before returning to Kingsholm.
Gloucester Squad Changes
Gloucester are actively reinforcing their squad for the 2026 season, having already confirmed the signings of Wales internationals Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake from Ospreys. Additionally, former academy graduate Dan Robson, 33, will return to Gloucester next season, ten years after leaving the club.
Williams’ departure is part of a broader reshaping of Gloucester’s squad, balancing the retention of experienced internationals with the recruitment of top Welsh talent.
Future Prospects
The Welsh scrum-half has been heavily linked with a move to Premiership rivals Saracens, although no official announcement has yet been made. His experience, leadership, and playmaking ability make him a highly sought-after asset in the English Premiership and European rugby.
Gloucester supporters can expect Williams to continue giving his all for the club until the season’s end, finishing his tenure at Kingsholm “on a high” and helping mentor younger players in the squad.
