Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin is in the spotlight as manager Danny Rohl seeks more from the Belgian international in the upcoming Scottish Premiership fixtures. Raskin, 24, has been central to Rohl’s plans after being on the fringes under former manager Russell Martin.
Rohl Holds Individual Talks with Raskin
Rohl revealed he held a detailed one-on-one conversation with Raskin, emphasizing the improvements he wants to see from the midfielder.
“Nico is an important player for me and the group,” said Rohl. “We worked individually on him and in meetings I spoke with him about what I want to see more. I had an individual talk with him in the last few days. It was very long, 25-30 minutes. I’m totally convinced that he recognises what we are doing.”
Raskin, who joined Rangers from Standard Liege in 2023, has played in multiple midfield roles but Rohl is clear about where he sees his best position on the pitch.
“It’s very clear for me that he’s a six because he likes to have the game in front of him,” said Rohl. “I see that he can attack forward from a six, rather than backwards from an eight or ten position. It’s very clear for me that he’s a six.”
Looking Ahead: Rangers vs Motherwell
Rangers return to league action this weekend against third-placed Motherwell at Ibrox. The team is determined to bounce back after a 2-1 defeat to Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts in their last outing.
Rohl believes that exploiting Motherwell’s defensive structure and maintaining intensity on the pitch will be key.
“They’re doing well,” he said of Motherwell. “They play a lot of 4-2-4 as a box in the middle. They have a lot of ball possession in the league. I think about over 60 percent possession. But I’m convinced that when we bring our intensity on the pitch, our structure, with the ball, against the ball, we can hurt them. They give us spaces where we can attack. I’m really looking forward to this game because I think both teams will try to play in the direction of their own.”
Raskin’s Role in Rohl’s Rangers Squad
Raskin’s versatility has been valuable for Rangers, but Rohl wants the Belgian to focus on controlling the game from deep, driving attacks from a number six position, and linking defence to attack efficiently. The manager is confident that Raskin is aligned with the team’s vision moving forward.
