Hull City’s push for a Championship play-off spot hit a bump as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday, the league’s bottom club. Despite twice equalising through Mohamed Belloumi and Matt Crooks, the Tigers couldn’t find a winner and had to settle for a point.
Sheffield Wednesday Take the Lead Twice
Sheffield Wednesday, depleted due to financial issues and points deductions, made an energetic start at Hillsborough. Svante Ingelsson put the home side ahead in the 20th minute, capitalising on a long clearance from goalkeeper Pierce Charles with a smart finish.
Hull struggled to create meaningful chances in the first half, with Belloumi unlucky not to level the score after turning Oli McBurnie’s cross toward goal, only for Liam Cooper to clear it off the line. But six minutes later, Hull equalised as Belloumi received Matt Crooks’ precise pass and fired low past Charles at the near post.
Hull Hit Back Again
In the second half, Sheffield Wednesday regained the lead against the run of play when Bailey Cadamarteri lobbed Ivor Pandur following a lofted ball from Barry Bannan.
Hull responded quickly once more, with Crooks slotting home after a free header was misjudged. Despite creating several late opportunities—including Enis Destan heading wide from a Ryan Giles cross—Hull could not find the winner.
Manager Reactions
Henrik Pedersen, Sheffield Wednesday manager, praised his players despite the challenging circumstances:
“I’m happy and proud of a performance where we were part of the game for 98 minutes. We played with six senior players and the young players stepped up. There’s a lot to be happy with but also areas to improve.”
Sergej Jakirovic, Hull City manager, admitted frustration with his team’s performance:
“We played very poorly in the first half with low energy and bad decisions. We improved in the second half but couldn’t secure the win. Psychologically, it was tough because everyone was counting on three points.”
Key Performances
- Pierce Charles (Sheffield Wednesday) – Man of the match with a rating of 8.02, crucial saves kept the Owls competitive.

Final Score: Sheffield Wednesday 2–2 Hull City
Hull City remain fourth in the Championship, missing the chance to climb higher after a three-game winning streak, while Sheffield Wednesday continue to struggle at the bottom, 30 points adrift due to earlier points deductions.
