Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter has suggested that veteran back Olly Woodburn could be offered a contract extension following an impressive display in the Premiership Rugby. The 34-year-old has become a key figure at Sandy Park, providing experience, versatility, and consistent performances over his 10-year tenure with the Chiefs.
Woodburn Shines at Full-Back
Woodburn recently made a first start at full-back in Exeter’s dramatic win against Saracens on Saturday, showcasing his adaptability and game intelligence. Over the past seasons, he has also covered the centre position, giving the Chiefs tactical flexibility in the backline.
Since joining Exeter from Bath in 2015, Woodburn has accumulated 60 tries in 185 appearances, underlining his value as a prolific and reliable scorer. His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, making his recent form a key factor in potential renewal discussions.
Baxter on Woodburn’s Contribution
Rob Baxter praised Woodburn’s performance and versatility:
“Right here and now, it’s going to be hard not to be talking about offering Olly a contract extension because he is one of our form players,” Baxter told BBC Sport.
The Exeter boss highlighted Woodburn’s willingness to adapt for the team:
“I actually mentioned it to him two or three weeks ago if he would be okay playing full-back if we decided to select that way. He said ‘fine, not a problem at all’, so that process started a little while ago, and then I was delighted how he played.”
Strategic Options for the Chiefs
Woodburn’s ability to cover multiple positions provides Exeter Chiefs with options in the back three, particularly while young talents like Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Paul Brown-Bampoe, and Campbell Ridl are developing. With Josh Hodge currently carrying a knock, Woodburn’s versatility has proven invaluable.
Baxter added:
“The way he played is opening up the opportunity for him to play more games at full-back, particularly with Campbell coming through and going well, Paul pretty much back from injury now, and obviously Manny playing very well. So it definitely gives us some options around the back three.”
Woodburn’s Legacy at Exeter
As one of Exeter Chiefs’ longest-serving players, Woodburn’s potential contract extension would reinforce the club’s commitment to experience and leadership within the squad. His tenacity, game awareness, and adaptability make him a crucial figure for the Chiefs’ Premiership and European campaigns.
If extended, Woodburn could continue to mentor younger backs while contributing directly on the field, offering a balance of experience and fresh talent to Exeter’s evolving roster.
