Gloucester Rugby director of rugby George Skivington has confirmed that his squad is fully committed to turning around their challenging Premiership Rugby season as they prepare to host Saracens at Kingsholm this Saturday.
The Cherry and Whites currently sit second from bottom in the Premiership table, having won only one of their opening seven matches. Their recent 45-14 defeat to Leicester Tigers marked their sixth loss in seven games, highlighting the need for a rapid response if they hope to salvage their campaign.
Skivington on Team Commitment
Speaking to BBC Radio Gloucestershire, Skivington emphasized the squad’s dedication:
“There’s no-one here not working or trying as hard as they can. It hasn’t come good for us yet, but we’re going to keep ripping into it and trying to get better all the time.”
He added that clear communication and accountability have been central to Gloucester’s approach:
“In weeks like this, there’s some straight-talking, and everyone’s reminded of their responsibilities. The boys are unbelievably committed to what they’re doing, and we want to get the season going.”
The Leicester Setback
Gloucester’s heavy loss to Leicester Tigers exposed weaknesses in both defence and attacking cohesion. Questions were raised about the team selection following several omissions for the Champions Cup defeat at Munster, which some critics suggested disrupted continuity.
Skivington defended the squad management strategy:
“You’ve got to look at squad sizes and the travelling. We have injuries, and we can’t just click our fingers and make people better. We did rest players to have a big game at Leicester, we didn’t deliver, and we have to own that.”
He stressed that the team is focused on moving past that defeat and making the most of the opportunity to get key players back on the field.
Looking Ahead to Saracens
Skivington sees the upcoming Premiership clash against Saracens as a pivotal moment:
“We want to shrug that [Leicester] game off as quickly as possible and get back on the field and perform. We love playing at Kingsholm, and we are aware that we do owe our fans.”
He added that while Saracens may also be looking to regain momentum, Gloucester are fully motivated to secure a much-needed victory:
“Saracens is a massive challenge as always. They won’t have had the start to the season they wanted either – it’s two teams coming together who both desperately want to get some wins under their belt.”
The Road to Recovery
Gloucester are now entering a crucial phase of their Premiership campaign, with Skivington highlighting the importance of team cohesion, player fitness, and tactical execution. With injuries easing and the full squad available, the team is optimistic about regaining form in the coming weeks.
Fans will be hoping that Kingsholm Stadium becomes a fortress once again as Gloucester aim to climb out of the Premiership relegation zone and establish consistent performance levels ahead of the festive fixtures.
