Newcastle upon Tyne – Newcastle Red Bulls have confirmed the signing of Argentina international lock Franco Molina, who will join the squad ahead of the 2026-27 Premiership Rugby season.
The 28-year-old second-row forward comes off a campaign with Western Force in Super Rugby and previously made 17 Premiership appearances for Exeter Chiefs last season. Molina has agreed a two-year deal with the Red Bulls.
International and Club Experience
Molina boasts 20 caps for Argentina, bringing valuable experience at the international level. He also has a strong club background, having played for:
- Dogos, Ceibos, and Jaguares in Argentina
- Selknam in Chile
- Exeter Chiefs in the English Premiership
“I’m incredibly honoured to be joining Newcastle Red Bulls – a club that has such a rich affinity with Argentinian players,” Molina said.
“After my conversation with Jonny Petrie [managing director] and Neil McIlroy [sporting general manager] it is obvious that this is a really exciting time to be involved with the club, and I cannot wait for what is to come. I’m looking forward to meeting my team-mates and achieving something special there.”
Club Perspective
Sporting general manager Neil McIlroy highlighted Molina’s experience and Premiership knowledge:
“Franco has built up valuable international experience in recent years by playing in many big games for Argentina. He knows the Premiership from his time with Exeter, and his set-piece ability will stand us in good stead as we look to put this club on a clear upward trajectory.”
Newcastle’s Current Season
The Red Bulls have struggled in the 2025-26 Premiership, currently sitting bottom of the table after eight consecutive defeats. They host second-from-bottom Gloucester in their next league fixture, seeking to turn their season around.
Molina’s arrival in the summer is expected to bolster Newcastle’s second-row options, adding strength in line-outs and scrums, and further enhancing the team’s international profile.
