
New York, US – Isiah Whitlock Jr., the acclaimed actor best known for his roles in The Wire and Veep, has died at the age of 71 after a brief illness, his manager confirmed.
“It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr.,” wrote manager Brian Liebman on Instagram. “If you knew him – you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.”
Longtime collaborator Spike Lee also paid tribute, writing, “Today I Learned Of The Passing Of My Dear Beloved Brother ISIAH WHITLOCK. GOD BLESS,” alongside a photo of the two shaking hands.
Career Highlights
Whitlock enjoyed a prolific career across film, television, and stage. He gained widespread recognition for his role as Senator Clay Davis in HBO’s The Wire, where he played a corrupt politician famous for his elongated, profane catchphrase. Whitlock said the signature delivery was inspired by his uncle, and it became a cultural touchstone beyond the show.
“I was in, I think, Grand Central Station and far away I heard someone say it and they’d be kind of smiling,” he told The New York Times in 2008. “I’m glad people enjoy it.”
In the political comedy Veep, Whitlock portrayed a comical version of the U.S. Secretary of Defense, who runs for office against Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character, delivering a memorable and humorous performance.
