Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre, Pastor Bolaji Idowu, has unveiled a new welfare initiative aimed at supporting church workers who are currently unemployed.
In a video that has gained widespread attention online, Pastor Idowu announced that eligible members who are actively serving in the church but are between jobs will receive ₦50,000 monthly for a period of three months. According to him, the support is designed to ease financial pressure while beneficiaries seek new employment opportunities.
He explained that the initiative is rooted in compassion and trust, adding that registered participants will not be subjected to any screening process. The pastor stressed that the church believes in the integrity of its members and is committed to standing by them during difficult times.
The announcement has triggered mixed reactions on social media. Many Nigerians praised the move, describing it as thoughtful and timely, with some likening it to social welfare systems practiced in developed countries. Supporters also applauded the church for stepping in where government support is often lacking.
However, critics questioned whether such responsibility should rest on religious institutions rather than the government. Others expressed skepticism about the pastor’s motives, while some suggested that beneficiaries should remain actively involved in church work or skills development during the support period.
Despite the differing opinions, the initiative has ignited broader conversations about unemployment, social safety nets, and the role of faith-based organizations in addressing economic hardship.
