The Coalition of Taraba Youths has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing leadership dispute at the Federal University Wukari (FUW) in Taraba State, warning that delays in appointing a new Vice-Chancellor could destabilize the university and the state.
In an open letter dated Saturday, the group commended the Federal Government for establishing FUW, noting that it has eased both the financial and social burdens on families in Taraba. Before the university’s establishment, many parents had to send their children to far-off states such as Borno, Plateau, Kaduna, Lagos, and Enugu to access tertiary education.
The youths highlighted that FUW has made higher education more accessible for low-income families and allowed parents to monitor the welfare of their children closely. Describing the institution as “a clear example of good governance and people-oriented policy,” the coalition expressed concern over the Pro-Chancellor’s recent actions.
According to the letter, the Pro-Chancellor suspended the Vice-Chancellor selection process and made decisions regarding the appointment of a University Librarian, citing an alleged directive from the Minister of Education to appoint an acting Vice-Chancellor. The coalition noted, however, that no official public directive has been issued.
“These developments have generated anxiety among the peace-loving people of Taraba State and raised concerns about potential unrest,” the letter stated, warning that leaving the issue unresolved could create unnecessary tension.
The coalition also referenced Taraba State’s history of peaceful coexistence and support for non-indigenous university officials, citing the recent appointment of a Chief Medical Director at the Federal University Wukari Teaching Hospital.
The group urged President Tinubu to ensure a transparent continuation of the Vice-Chancellor selection process, emphasizing that timely action is essential to maintaining peace and stability within the university and the wider state.
