Aizawl, Mizoram: Former Mizoram Ranji Trophy cricketer K Lalremruata tragically passed away on Thursday, hours after collapsing while playing a local cricket match. He was 38 years old.
The incident occurred during the Khaled Memorial 2nd Division Screening Tournament, in a match between Venghnuai Raiders Cricket Club (VRCC) and Chawnpui ILMOV CC at the Suaka Cricket Ground near Sairang railway station. Lalremruata, representing VRCC, suddenly collapsed on the field while the game was ongoing. Officials reported that he suffered a stroke, and although he was rushed for immediate medical attention, he could not be revived.
Cricketing Career and Contributions
A resident of Maubawk near Aizawl, Lalremruata had an extensive domestic cricketing career. He represented Mizoram twice in the Ranji Trophy and played seven times in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. A wicketkeeper by role, he made his first-class debut against Meghalaya in 2018, and his last competitive match was in 2022 against Nagaland.
Beyond first-class cricket, Lalremruata was a regular figure in Mizoram’s local cricket circuit, representing multiple clubs over the years and contributing to the growth of the sport in the region. He was also actively involved in cricket administration, serving on the Senior Tournament Committee, helping develop grassroots cricket programs in Mizoram.
Reactions and Condolences
The Cricket Association of Mizoram (CAM) described his death as a major loss to the state’s cricketing community. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family; may God comfort them as they navigate this great loss,” CAM said in an official statement.
Lalnghinglova Hmar, Mizoram’s Sports and Youth Services Minister, also expressed grief over the passing of Lalremruata, praising his contributions to cricket in the state. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)extended condolences, mourning the untimely death of the former domestic cricketer.

In the wake of the tragedy, several matches scheduled for Thursday in Mizoram, including fixtures of the Khaled Memorial 2nd Division Screening Tournament, were cancelled as a mark of respect. Officials indicated that revised schedules will be announced later.
