Popular Nigerian Fuji musician Saheed Osupa has responded after Islamic cleric Al-Waraqi Olopameta caused nationwide controversy by claiming the singer would die on January 10, 2026.
The controversy began when a video circulated online showing Olopameta asserting that God had revealed Osupa’s impending death. The cleric swore by the Qur’an and his own life to back the claim and even suggested that Osupa could avoid the fate through a ritual involving a white ram.
The prophecy immediately sparked outrage online, with Nigerians condemning the statement as dangerous and irresponsible. Islamic scholar Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Ishola Olanrewaju Alfulany publicly challenged Olopameta, warning that he could face legal consequences for spreading false religious claims.
Under mounting criticism, Olopameta later retracted his claim, admitting that the prophecy was a tactic to get Osupa’s attention. He further appeared in another video pleading for forgiveness, claiming he had hidden in a forest for fear of his safety.
Responding to the incident, Saheed Osupa denounced the cleric’s actions, calling Olopameta a fake cleric and warning against reckless spiritual pronouncements. Osupa asserted that he would not die as predicted and emphasized that Olopameta himself would face the consequences before him.
The incident continues to provoke discussion, with many Nigerians advocating for stricter accountability for individuals spreading fear through false religious prophecies.
