Two Suspected Arms Dealers Arrested in Taraba by Nigerian Army, DIA

The Nigerian Army, in collaboration with the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), has arrested two suspected arms dealers in Taraba State, as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle illicit weapons networks in the North-East.

The arrests took place on January 11, 2026, under a coordinated intelligence-led operation within Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) and Operation Peace Shield, with troops from the 6 Brigade, Sector 3 leading the operation.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the first suspect, Christopher Adamu, also known as “Suffer,” 48, was apprehended at Sebos Joint in Jalingo LGA. Items recovered from him included identification cards, a mobile phone, rings, and assorted charms. Investigations revealed he was actively involved in illegal arms supply and named an accomplice, “Chmn,” from Karim Lamido LGA.

Following the initial arrest, troops apprehended a second suspect, James Yangyang, 37, at Tautre Village, near Anguwan Bera in Ardo Kola LGA. Further inquiries linked Adamu to the sale of an AK-47 rifle in November 2025, confirming a wider arms trafficking network operating within the state.

Both suspects remain in military custody as investigations continue, and they are expected to be handed over to authorities for prosecution.

Reacting to the operation, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of 6 Brigade and Sector 3 OPWS, praised the troops and intelligence operatives for their professionalism. He warned criminals and collaborators that the Army would not relent in its mission to secure Taraba State.

“6 Brigade will continue to rid Taraba State and its environs of illegal arms dealers and criminal elements,” Uwa stated. “Those aiding or collaborating with criminals should desist immediately or face the full weight of the law.”

The military also called on the public to provide timely and credible intelligence to enhance security efforts, assuring that all information would be treated confidentially and acted upon promptly.

The arrests highlight ongoing military operations to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons and restore safety in Taraba State and surrounding areas.
