The Nigerian Army has successfully rescued 18 passengers, including two infants, after their boat was hijacked by sea pirates near Kombo Fishing Port in Cameroonian waters on January 11, 2026.
According to Major Yemi Sokoya, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 13 Brigade, the attackers, operating two speedboats and a wooden vessel, intercepted the passenger boat while it traveled from Nigeria to Cameroon. A distress call immediately alerted troops deployed at Ikang, who mobilized swiftly to pursue the assailants.
During the pursuit, an exchange of fire occurred, resulting in one of the pirates’ speedboats capsizing. The attackers eventually abandoned the kidnapped passengers and fled into the surrounding creeks. All 18 passengers were rescued unharmed.
Brigadier General P.O. Alimikhena, Commander of 13 Brigade, commended the troops for their professionalism and courage, noting that the operation highlights the Army’s dedication to protecting lives and securing regional waterways.
He also urged the public to provide timely intelligence to security agencies, emphasizing that community cooperation is essential to maintaining safety along waterways in Cross River State.
The successful rescue underscores the 13 Brigade’s ongoing commitment to combating criminal activity and safeguarding citizens across Nigeria’s maritime borders.
