West Ham Reluctant to Sell Lucas Paquetá Amid Transfer Interest from Brazil

West Ham United are reportedly reluctant to sanction a mid-season transfer for Lucas Paquetá, despite reported interest from his native Brazil, including top-flight club Flamengo. The 28-year-old midfielder has been a key figure for the Hammers this season, making 18 Premier League appearances, scoring four goals, and providing one assist.

Brazilian Clubs Eye Paquetá

Sources indicate that at least two Brazilian clubs have expressed interest in signing Paquetá this month, with Flamengo reportedly preparing a bid in the region of £35 million. While the midfielder is said to be open to a return to South America, West Ham remain cautious about selling a player integral to manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s plans, particularly as the team navigates a relegation battle.

Paquetá has 18 months remaining on his contract at London Stadium, and while a summer transfer remains a possibility, any move in January would likely require a substantial offer to convince the club to part ways with one of their key starters.

Paquetá’s Role at West Ham

The Brazil international has been a regular starter this season, contributing both offensively and in midfield link-up play. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo values the creative midfielder for his ability to influence games, making him a vital part of West Ham’s strategy to maintain Premier League safety.

“Paquetá remains an important member of our squad,” a club source said. “We have not received any formal offers this month, but any proposal would need to reflect his significance to the team.”

Spot-Fixing Investigation and Clearance

Paquetá has also had to contend with off-field distractions. He was charged by the Football Association (FA) in May 2024 for allegedly receiving a booking in a match for the “improper purpose of affecting the betting market,” an incident linked to an investigation that began in August 2023.

However, the midfielder was cleared by an independent regulatory commission in July 2025, removing any disciplinary hurdles to a potential move abroad.

Transfer Window Considerations

West Ham’s reluctance to sell highlights the club’s focus on squad stability during a challenging season. While Flamengo and other interested clubs are expected to continue monitoring the situation, a mid-season transfer would require a deal that aligns with both the player’s ambitions and West Ham’s valuation.

Paquetá’s potential return to Brazil remains a talking point, with speculation set to continue throughout the January transfer window, especially as clubs seek to strengthen ahead of continental competitions in South America.
