Human rights activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju has expressed support for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s handling of the legal proceedings involving former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN. At the same time, he criticized opposition figures for what he described as inconsistent and politically motivated reactions.
In a statement, Adeyanju said it was troubling that some political actors publicly defended individuals under investigation while simultaneously advocating for governance reforms and anti-corruption measures. He stressed that the allegations against Malami, including claims of unlawful asset acquisition, are still under investigation and should follow due legal process.
Adeyanju argued that defending suspects before investigations are concluded undermines public confidence in anti-corruption efforts. He suggested that opposition parties should instead call for consistent enforcement of anti-graft laws across all political lines, rather than questioning the EFCC’s action against credible allegations.
Citing past cases involving former public officials, Adeyanju emphasized that the role of anti-corruption agencies is to investigate anyone facing credible allegations, regardless of political affiliation or status. He warned against selective outrage, where support for investigations depends on political convenience, and stressed that Nigeria’s progress requires allowing law enforcement to function without intimidation, public pressure, or partisan interference.
Reaffirming his commitment to due process and the rule of law, Adeyanju reminded the public that an investigation is not a declaration of guilt, and all individuals are entitled to a fair hearing.
