Gospel Singer Omije Ojumi Passes Away After Prolonged Illness

Popular Nigerian gospel musician Bunmi Adeoye Akinnanu, widely known by her stage name Omije Ojumi, has passed away.

According to available reports, the gospel singer died on Tuesday after a prolonged illness linked to a leg ailment. Her death comes several months after she publicly sought prayers and divine healing, drawing attention to her health struggles.

In 2025, a video from a church service at G.F. David Ministries in Ibadan, Oyo State, circulated widely on social media. The footage showed Omije Ojumi seated with her affected leg stretched out while prayers were offered on her behalf. During the service, a cleric disclosed that she had been experiencing persistent bleeding from the leg, prompting intense intercessory prayers from the congregation.

Rise to Stardom

Omije Ojumi rose to prominence in the early 2000s after leaving a successful career in the banking sector to pursue gospel music full-time. Her stage name, Omije Oju Mi, meaning “Tears of My Eyes,” was derived from her debut album, which brought her widespread recognition and endeared her to gospel music lovers across Nigeria.

She went on to release several impactful albums, including Dabira, Alatilehin, Ma Sunkun Mo, and Testimony. She was also the leader of the Omije Ojumi Gospel International Music Band.

Academically, Akinnanu studied Industrial Relations and Personnel Management at Lagos State University (LASU) after attending Lagos State Polytechnic. Before transitioning fully into gospel music, she reportedly worked in the banking industry for over a decade.

Renowned for blending traditional and contemporary gospel sounds, Omije Ojumi built a loyal following through songs centered on faith, perseverance, and unwavering trust in God. Her passing marks a significant loss to Nigeria’s gospel music community.
