A legal practitioner, Dayo Adu, has stressed the need for continuous medical-legal education for doctors to strengthen their understanding of professional duties and patients’ rights.
Speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday, Adu highlighted a gap in legal training within the medical profession, even as doctors undergo continuous medical education. He recommended closer collaboration between medical practitioners and legal experts to ensure doctors are fully aware of their responsibilities under the law.
“Doctors need to understand the legal dimensions of their work,” Adu said. “Partnerships with lawyers or legal institutions could help bridge this knowledge gap.”
Adu also called for increased public awareness about patients’ rights, noting that informed patients are better positioned to demand accountability. He added that the medical profession must engage in self-reflection to address systemic challenges and uphold the standard of care owed to every patient.
