Ondo Correctional Service Foils Attempt to Smuggle Drugs into Akure Prison

The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has successfully intercepted an attempt to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Akure, the state capital.

The incident occurred during a routine security search at the facility’s gate lodge, where officers discovered approximately four grams of suspected Indian hemp hidden inside fresh tomatoes. According to an official statement released by NCoS on Wednesday, the drugs were wrapped in water-tight nylon and allegedly intended for delivery to an inmate in custody.

Following the discovery, the two visitors involved were immediately arrested in line with directives from the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, which emphasize watertight security and the safeguarding of correctional facilities. The suspects have since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The Controller of Corrections for Ondo State, Oyewole Charles, commended the officers involved for their vigilance, professionalism, and swift response. He reiterated the Service’s commitment to maintaining secure and humane custodial facilities while ensuring that all forms of illicit drug trafficking are eradicated from the correctional system.

The Command also issued a stern warning to the public, particularly visitors to correctional facilities, stressing that any actions compromising the security and safety of these institutions will not be tolerated.
