Afrobeats singer Spyro has revealed that publicly declaring his faith in Jesus Christ has brought challenges within the Nigerian music industry.
During a recent conversation with Echo Room, Spyro recounted a conversation with Banky W, the popular R&B star-turned-pastor, who shared his own experience. Banky W confided that his struggles in the industry began after he openly proclaimed his Christian faith.
Spyro explained that embracing the “Jesus boy” identity has led to a lack of support and goodwill within the music scene. He stated, “My biggest challenge right now is discrimination. I came out with the ‘Jesus boy’ brand, and I’ve faced the biggest criticisms.”
He added, “If you want to be truthful, how many media moguls support or post my songs? They post other artists, but aside from the blogs I pay to promote me, how many media moguls actually post me? I sometimes wonder why that is because there are others not doing as well as I am who get featured. The answer is simple: once you publicly declare Christ, you’re entering a battle.”
Spyro continued, “It feels like the whole system is designed to pull you down. Banky W told me his problems started the moment he declared his faith. He warned me to be prepared for this, saying that when he was living the ‘bad boy’ lifestyle, everything was going well, but once he decided to take a godly path, the war began.”
