Bodija Residents Renew Calls for Justice and Support Two Years After Explosion

Two years after the devastating January 16, 2024, explosion at Bodija Estate in Ibadan, the Bodija Estate Residents Association (BERA) has renewed appeals for greater government intervention and justice for victims. The blast claimed five lives, left many injured, and destroyed multimillion-naira properties.

Pastor Muyiwa Bamgbose, BERA President, urged the Oyo State Government to release additional funds, emphasizing that earlier assistance was insufficient. Only residents within a 500-meter radius of the epicenter received support, leaving many affected families without help for rebuilding homes or caring for dependents.

“Some families lost loved ones and have not received any form of compensation. Residents who began rebuilding their homes are struggling due to inadequate funds,” Bamgbose stated, appealing for calm and assurance that all affected individuals would eventually be supported.

Representing the governor, Mr. Demola Omotosho of the Oyo State Housing Corporation reiterated the government’s commitment to Bodija’s infrastructural repair, including roads and public facilities. He assured residents that ongoing interventions would continue and that no one would be shortchanged.

Rev. Julius Okanlawon, Pastor-in-charge of Bodija Estate Baptist Church, stressed the need for justice, urging authorities to prosecute those responsible for the explosion. He highlighted ongoing health challenges among victims, including respiratory issues and psychological trauma.

Survivors also recounted their struggles. Muhammad Danasi described losing all his belongings and suffering serious health setbacks, appealing for further government assistance. Aduke Odia expressed gratitude for surviving, acknowledging support received from the government and the community, while an octogenarian lost her entire building and received only a fraction of the funds needed to rebuild.

The renewed demand comes amid public discussions over the ₦30 billion intervention fund announced by the Federal Government, with approximately ₦4.2 billion allegedly released for reconstruction and compensation. Residents continue to call for full disbursement and justice for all affected parties.
