Visually Impaired UNN Graduate Feared Deafness After Hostel Beating Over Alleged Theft

A visually impaired graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Ifeanyi Michael, has appealed for justice after being allegedly assaulted by six students over a purported stolen phone, leaving him with partial hearing loss in addition to his blindness.

Michael told Reporters that residents of Eni Njoku Hostel broke into his room, beat him with iron rods and sticks, and stole all his belongings, including clothes and shoes. The attack reportedly stemmed from an accusation that another student, Godwin Godson, had given Michael a stolen mobile phone.

“I cannot be blind and also deaf over something I know nothing about,” Michael lamented. “They beat me so badly that my left ear is now impaired. My nose was also broken, and all my belongings were taken.”

He identified his assailants as Obiajulu Chijioke Daniel, Oraeli David Arinze, Ayogu Michael Chibuzo, Dilinna Wisdom, Onwo Erickson, and Divine Udechukwu, a former Eni Njoku Hall Governor. Michael, who had graduated but was still staying in the hostel for a post-graduation programme, said the students also intended to take him and Godwin to a native doctor to determine guilt. However, he described the process as confusing and inconsistent, with no clear resolution.

Michael added that he has been forced to rely on self-medication for his injuries, buying ear and eye drops from a pharmacy due to the cost of proper medical care.

He has formally reported the incident to UNN’s Students’ Affairs and Security Units since December 2025 but says no action has been taken. The university’s Public Relations Officer, Agha Egwu Inya, instructed him to file complaints with the relevant units, yet Michael claims the matter remains unresolved.

Michael called on university authorities and law enforcement to intervene, recover his stolen property, and ensure those responsible face prosecution.
